Sandford first XI played their second game of the season away at Horspath in the National Village knockout. Skipper Steve Dobson won the toss and decided to bat. On a slow, low challenging wicket, we lost Tom Hill early. Welch joined Russ at the wicket and they set about rebuilding. Russel made light work of the pitch, racing to 49 before drinks. But as we know drinks bring wickets and sure enough next ball he was given LBW and left to go an examine the roof tiles he had earlier broken! Welch and Thompson continued to bat sensibly, Chris falling just short of a 50 in the final over. Sandford ended on 199-4 from their 40 overs, 20 runs short but very much in the game.
Rizzy and Goffe opening the bowling, Thompson and Minty followed, but Horspath's openers ran well and batted better. They passed 100 without loss, albeit with a little luck. Tom Goffe was thrown the ball to break the partnership and he did, an LBW which would have cannoned into the base of the stumps. 2 more quick wickets kept Sandford interested, but Phillips continued plodding on and carried his bat for 75*, Horspath finally reaching the total in the 39th over.
A great game, played in great spirits, more overs in the legs and some time in the middle. Good luck to Horspath in the competition and for the rest of the season, we move onto Great Tew at home next weekend.
